About the course

This intensive one-day course provides a practical overview of oil markets trading, covering the fundamentals of physical and futures markets, pricing mechanisms, crude and product acquisition strategies, arbitrage opportunities, freight economics, and hedging techniques. Participants will explore how market structure, quality differentials, timing decisions, and refinery economics influence trading outcomes and profitability. Through interactive exercises and real-world scenarios, attendees will apply trading and risk management concepts to crude and product acquisition decisions while gaining insight into effective market risk management practices.

Head of Near-Term Oil Research and Analysis, S&P Global Energy

Rick Joswick heads S&P Global Energy’s team focused on near-term aspects of the oil supply chain and pricing. This bridges the gap between raw oil supplies and end-user demand and relates forecast balances with inventory and price outlooks. Areas addressed include crude oil, refined products, refining operations, trade, and arbitrage. His team develops Energy’s outlooks for refinery outages, near-term trade flows, and inventories, as well as near term prompt oil prices and structure. He was the leader for numerous multi-client studies examining crude and product markets. Rick joined S&P Global in 2016 after over 10 years at PIRA and 20 years with ExxonMobil. Rick has advanced degrees from Rutgers University in chemical engineering.

Debnil Chowdhury

Vice President, Americas Head of Refining and Marketing

Debnil Chowdhury leads S&P Global Commodity Insights' team responsible for short- and long-term refined product supply, demand, pricing, and refining margin outlooks across North and Latin America. Since joining the company in 2012, he has developed proprietary forecasting models covering both the NGL and refining sectors, with expertise spanning refining, petrochemicals, crude and product markets, and price forecasting.
In addition to leading market research, Debnil has supported consulting engagements focused on market strategy, asset valuations, due diligence, and market entry assessments across global energy markets. Prior to S&P Global, he held roles with Valero, KBR, Bechtel, and the U.S. government. He holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech, an MS in Predictive Analytics and Data Science from Northwestern University, and an MBA from Rice University.
